In “Allow access to the microphone on this device,” make sure both “Microphone access for this device” and “Allow apps to access your microphone” are turned on.

On Windows 10, click Start, go to Settings, go to Security & Privacy, and then click Microphone.

You can then select which apps you want to grant access to your webcam. Ensure that Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone is turned on along with the individual toggle for the app you plan to use.

On Windows 11, click Start, go to Settings, go to Privacy, and then click Microphone.

Select Microphone, and then select the checkbox next to the app to grant it access to your mic.

Microphone access on Mac: On a Mac with macOS Mojave or later, open System Preferences, click Security and Privacy, then click Privacy.

If the troubleshooter doesn’t resolve your issues, or if you are on a Mac, you can manually grant access to your microphone for specific apps. On Windows, you can start with the automated audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. If you missed the prompt, or if your mic test is still not working, check your microphone browser permissions in Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.įor desktop apps like screen recorders, make sure you have granted access to the app to be able to record audio with your microphone. For this mic test, make sure you click “Allow” when your browser prompts you for access to your microphone. Make sure your browser has access to your microphone to be able to test your audio. Select the mic you’re testing (your internal microphone will show as “ Display Audio”) and adjust the input volume as needed.

On macOS: Under the Apple menu, click System preferences > Sound > Input.

Click Input, confirm that your microphone is selected under Choose your input device and then select your device properties to check and adjust the volume settings.

On Windows: Click Start > Settings > System > Sound.

Once you’ve confirmed that your mic is not muted during your mic test, check the volume settings. Check your connections, make sure the microphone is on and not muted, and that you have the latest drivers installed.

If using an external mic, make sure your device recognizes it. If you’re using an external mic, make sure it’s plugged into your device and turned on.

If you have more than one microphone, choose the one you want to test and use from the drop-down menu at the top of the test. Make sure that you have selected the right mic for your test.

If your mic test wasn’t successful, let’s rule out the most straightforward fixes first.
